Children’s Book Review: Father Sun and Mother Earth Create Life by Tools of the Heart

Father Sun and Mother Create Life

Tools of the Heart book series aims to support children’s emotional and social development through self-care tools and skills. Father Sun and Mother Earth Create Life — the first title of the height book series — is a gorgeous tale of LIFE told from the perspective of Father Sun and Mother Earth. The reader is taken on a lovely journey from creation to navigating life’s demands in order to find balance, calm and well-being.

The book begins with Father Sun and Mother Earth falling in love and choosing to “grow a garden” with one another– they choose to create life on Earth while the Sun provides warmth, love and support. To Father Sun’s and Mother Earth’s delight their garden begins to grow– and is filled with beautiful, budding lands.

However, one day their garden falls ill. Father Sun and Mother Earth become very worried and are unsure of how to help their garden. They decide to ask their friend Moon for help.

“By learning to breathe deeply, Mother Earth will allow the garden to bloom and flourish,” she said. Moon then reminds Mother Earth of her “rainbow of wisdom” deep within her heart– this rainbow serving as a metaphor for our inner strengths and resources throughout the series.

Mother Earth’s wisdom appears to her in the form of a tiny red elf who then guides her to breathe in and out gently and deeply to find calm. The deep breathing relaxes her so much she decides to share her newfound wisdom with her garden. Together Father Sun and Mother Earth teach their garden to breathe out their fears and anxiety, and breathe in relaxed, calm thoughts.

The book’s sweet illustrations help personify the sun, planets, moon, gardens and stars in a beautiful sentiment of the creation of life. Simple written commands help the reader to follow guided breathing meditations with ease which can be helpful to any child (or adult) experiencing overwhelming thoughts who need to find their hearts center.

Tools of the Heart book series– perfect for young readers ages 4 to 7 years old– holds invaluable tools for families, educators, and behavioral counselors to utilize in assisting children develop a deeper understanding of themselves as well as how to develop healthy self-care skills.

Father Sun and Mother Earth Create Life wishes to impart the importance of breathing and finding our own rhythm, which is the foundational building block of the positive self-care mindset and the subsequent tools that characterize this wonderful book series.
