Children’s Book Review- “Something’s Eating the Garden” by Pam Fries

Pam Fries, an award-winning artist and illustrator, has published a lovely children’s picture book titled Something’s Eating the Garden.

The gorgeously illustrated book features an amazing garden adventure with a child and Papa. Papa discovers that something is eating his garden and the child tries to solve the mystery by guessing who the creature culprit could be.

The sweet (and curious) child imagines different animals— like an elephant, giraffe, pig or even a crocodile— nibbling on the garden plants.

But to no avail none are the guilty party!

With each turn of the page, the reader is greeted by whimsical, bright and beautiful, full-page illustrations.

It is a delight to the senses and will help create a curiosity of the outdoors, animal life and vegetables for every young child! A wonderful educational tool, for sure.

The Washington State author Pam Fries, published the book soon after the passing of her husband who the character “Papa” was based around. They were together for 40 years, and the book gave her purpose and a place to remember the legacy of her husband.

She has 5 beautiful grandchildren, a dog and many chickens!

Pam enjoys speaking to schools and Women’s groups, creating breath taking art— and working in the garden.

Bring Mommy’s Big, Red Monster Truck to Your School, Bookstore, Library or Venue!!!

Alison Paul Klakowicz, Author of Mommy’s Big, Red Monster Truck

I just want to thank each indie bookstore, Barnes and Noble, school, library and other venue that has allowed me to visit for story-time and author events.

It is so crucial for authors to receive this exposure and welcome. I have worked extremely hard to cultivate an educational, fun and engaging program.

I would be so grateful to anyone out there with a young child, grandchild or elementary school aged child who would like for me to visit their school, local bookstore, library or other family friendly venue to reach out to me or the venue and request me to visit!!!

This would help me so much and I would be forever in your debt— and THANKFUL.

Veteran Voices

New York, New York—

Poetic Theater Productions’ 5th Annual showcase of original work by veterans—Veterans Voices— expressing their experiences and stories from within and beyond the military will be held this coming Saturday, March 7th at 2pm at Wild Project, 195 East 3rd Street, New York, NY. The event will feature theater, poetry and music.

According to Eastern North Carolina native and veteran Omar Columbus— whose poetry will be featured at the event, “Poetic Theater Productions’ 5th annual showcase of original work by veterans, Veteran Voices calls upon the traditions of past warrior cultures such as the Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans, who welcomed their military home in rituals of storytelling.

Reviving these practices, military veteran artists take the stage to share their stories and experiences in a way that is both healing and informs others, sharing the moral burden of war.

Following the showcase, there will be a post-show discussion on the movement to support existing and new programming in New York which highlights veteran voices…

Veterans and students can get $15 discount tickets (just choose the veteran or student option when purchasing online)… And please know that any veteran that wants to attend will not be turned away due to a lack of funds.”

Omar Columbus, NC native, Photographer, Poet and Veteran

Children’s Book Review- If The Slipper Fits by Lindsay DeRollo

If The Slipper Fits author Lindsay DeRollo

Lindsay DeRollo has written and illustrated an adorable children’s picture book, If The Slipper Fits, which is the third book in her Sugarplum Stars series.

The book features two little ballerina’s Emma and Pinky who are performing their roles in the ballet Cinderella. The pair along with their ballet mates auditioned for their parts and are quite excited to twinkle their toes.

However following their performance, Emma becomes quite conscientious of her height following her performance when she overhears two other dancers commenting that Emma is a talented dancer, but tall dancers like Emma never get the lead role.

This comment upsets Emma greatly as she loves to dance and longs to be a “real ballerina.” She begins to question if she is good enough because of her height. Emma makes the decision to talk about the gossip she overheard and face her fear by asking her dance teacher, Miss Linda, if it is indeed true that tall dancers never get the lead.

To Emma’s surprise and delight, her teacher reassures her this could not be further from the truth, “Nonsense… Size should have nothing to do with a dancer’s talent…” said Miss Linda to a very relieved Emma.

Instantly Emma’s spirits are lifted and her hopes and dreams of becoming a ballerina in a lead role on stage are renewed.

The story’s focus of believing in one’s self despite your size is such an important topic to be discussed for all children as to instill a positive self image in one-self. Also a lesson to others to be mindful of what you say as it could deeply hurt others.

I highly recommend this book for all the little dancers in the world as well as all children learning the lesson of the importance of building a healthy self-esteem and body image.

Lindsay DeRollo is a children’s book author and illustrator living in Central New York. Her book series is published under an independent publishing company named Two Girls and a Reading Corner https://twogirlsandareadingcorner.com/

Lindsay also has a self-published short story through Amazon, titled “Prima Ballerina”. https://www.amazon.com/author/lindsayderollo

She continues to write and illustrate children’s books which will be published later this year.

Not Everyone Will Like You

Internet image

Yep. It’s true— at times, a hard pill to swallow.

Not everyone will like you. Not everyone will support you. Not everyone will applaud you.

Nope. It won’t happen.

And it is perfectly okay.

You cannot make people like you.

Be kind and courteous. Yet do not be afraid to stand up for yourself. Be true to you.

Always strive to be supportive of others and applaud them, but remember the courtesy may not be returned in favor.

This can be hurtful.

Stain your pride.

Make you second guess yourself. Second guess your hard work. SECOND GUESS YOUR GENUINE SELF.

And if you allow it, it can destroy you.

The sunny side of this dilemma is this— YOU CAN CHOOSE TO LIKE YOURSELF.

You can choose to place one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.

You can choose not to harbor ill will, anger, disappointment and hurt feelings.

YOU CAN CHOOSE TO FORGIVE.

YOU CAN CHOOSE LOVE OF SELF, LIFE AND OTHERS (whether they love you or not).

But remember, not everyone is YOU.

If you are out there giving it your all—but struggling with this dilemma, I encourage you to say these words to yourself EVERYDAY.

I AM UNIQUE.

I AM WORTHY.

I LIKE ME.

I AM PROUD OF MY EFFORTS.

I CHOOSE TO LOVE OTHERS.

Now quit worrying about those who aren’t worrying over you— and get out there and keep being awesome.
